Bengaluru: Farmers in Karnataka who suffered crop losses on 1.58 lakh hectares due to heavy rains will be compensated within a week, Revenue minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced on Friday.
Speaking after a video conference with deputy commissioners across all districts, Gowda stated that a comprehensive survey conducted over the past month estimated the total crop loss at Rs 120 crore. “In a week’s time, compensation will be credited to farmers’ bank accounts,” he was quoted as saying by Deccan Herald.
Deputy commissioners have Rs 642 crore with them, which will be used to dispense compensation quickly. Gowda also noted that Rs 162 crore has already been released to address damages caused by heavy rains, including loss of homes and lives in affected areas.
Additionally, the minister stated that 5,000 applicants will be given cultivation certificates by December 15 under Bagair Hukum, which deals with regularisation of unauthorised occupation of public lands.
“Lakhs of people have applied under Bagair Hukum seeking grant of lands. We are considering 1.26 lakh applications as eligible,” Gowda said. He added that in the first phase, the target is to clear 5,000 applications, which will increase to 15,000–20,000 by January.
Gowda further said that that eligible Bagair Hukum beneficiaries will be given digital cultivation certificates.

New Delhi: Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking a separate seating arrangement for Members of Parliament belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) following the end of the party’s alliance with the Indian National Congress.
In a letter dated May 7 addressed to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Kanimozhi said the changed political situation made it inappropriate for DMK MPs to continue sitting alongside Congress members in the House.
She requested the Speaker to make “suitable changes” in the seating arrangement of the DMK Parliamentary Party and allot separate seating for its MPs.
“In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House,” the letter stated.
Kanimozhi further said separate seating would help DMK members effectively discharge their responsibilities in the Lok Sabha.
