Kalaburagi: An FIR was filed against three personnel of the Brahmapura Police Station for dereliction of duty in relation to the alleged suicide of an accused in 2022 when he was brought to hospital for a medical check-up.
The legal action was taken against the three policemen, ASI Abdul Khader (54) and constables Hunachappa Mallappa (56) and Kumara Rathod (22), following a CID investigation of the death of 20-year-old Shoaib, who had jumped from the third floor of the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital in 2022, when he was brought there for check-up.
Shoaib had allegedly been taken into custody by the Brahmapura Police officers on August 8, 2022 and had been brought to GIMS Hospital for a Covid-19 check-up prior to presenting him before court. As the police unlocked the shackles at the hospital, however, Shoaib had escaped from their hands and jumped from the third floor of the hospital.
The case of Shoaib’s death had been handed over to the CID officers, who checked the CCTV camera footages among other witnesses, submitted a 257-page report on the probe. The report confirms the policemen to be guilty of dereliction of duty by failing to retain the accused in police custody and stop him from escaping.
In the backdrop of the report submitted by the CID team, an FIR has been filed against Khader, Hunachappa and Kumar under IPC Section 225 (A), (B).
