Hubballi: Members of the Karnataka Kalasa Banduri Farmers’ Struggle Committee staged a protest in the city on Saturday, demanding the implementation of the Mahadayi Project as well as the Krishna Irrigation Project.
The farmers, who gathered near Durgabail on Saturday morning, shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. They also burnt a portrait of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is in the city, calling out, “Go Back, Amit Shah!”
Siddu Teji, chairperson of the farmers’ committee, said that the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission would benefit farmers in the region greatly. “Farmers here are struggling without support prices for their crops. They are fighting against both excessive rainfall and drought. The Central and the state governments should take immediate action in relation to the farmers’ problems,” he demanded.
“The people are being misguided by the BJP leaders, who have been claiming that they have received approval for the implementation of the Mahadayi Project, although the Forest Department is yet to give permission. The work on the banks of River Krishna too has been halted. The Central government has not granted any funds,” he added.
“Modi and Shah have been visiting the state frequently, but with only a façade of development work. They are interested in merely campaigning for the upcoming elections and not progress,” the leader said and added, “The political leaders come here to give money to the people as a means of wooing voters. The election officers should check the flights the leaders travel in.”

New Delhi: Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking a separate seating arrangement for Members of Parliament belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) following the end of the party’s alliance with the Indian National Congress.
In a letter dated May 7 addressed to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Kanimozhi said the changed political situation made it inappropriate for DMK MPs to continue sitting alongside Congress members in the House.
She requested the Speaker to make “suitable changes” in the seating arrangement of the DMK Parliamentary Party and allot separate seating for its MPs.
“In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House,” the letter stated.
Kanimozhi further said separate seating would help DMK members effectively discharge their responsibilities in the Lok Sabha.
