Kalaburagi: Artist Rehman Patel has been selected for the prestigious 52nd annual Karnataka State Lalitkala Academy Award for the year 2022–23. His traditional miniature painting titled Madhyamadi Raga, has earned him a cash prize of ₹25,000 along with a citation.

The award will be formally presented on May 23 at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru. On the same day, the selected artworks, including Patel’s, will be showcased at the Indian Institute of World Culture.

Patel has dedicated over two decades to mastering the Surpur miniature art tradition, a style that thrived under the patronage of the Surpur Nayaks between 1773 and 1858 AD. Recognising his commitment to preserving this endangered art form, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture awarded him a fellowship in 2002.
