Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has directed that a case be registered against a woman police officer for allegedly kicking a woman advocate at a police station following a road rage complaint.

The order was passed by a single-judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna while hearing a petition filed by an advocate seeking to quash the case registered against her at Mico Layout Police Station. The court, however, refused to stay proceedings against the advocate.

The court observed that CCTV footage from the station shows that police officer Padmavathi kicked the advocate with her boot without sufficient cause, even though the allegation against the advocate was that she had pulled and thrown some documents from a table inside the station.

Stating that merely issuing a departmental warning would not be sufficient, the court directed that a criminal case be registered against the officer and a proper investigation be carried out.

During the hearing, the bench also took note of the advocate’s behaviour. It questioned why she created a disturbance at the police station and why she threw official documents. The court observed that such conduct cannot be justified even if there was a delay in registering the complaint.

The bench said that while a case would be registered against the police officer for the assault, the proceedings against the advocate would also continue.

Additional State Public Prosecutor B.N. Jagadeesh submitted that there was no objection to registering a case against the officer but argued that the petition should not be closed, alleging that the advocate had used abusive language.

Appearing for the petitioner, advocate D.L. Murthy said his client was made to wait for two hours at the police station and had also lost her job due to the case.

The court further observed that the case against officer Padmavathi should be reflected in her service records and directed that she should not be granted any promotion, stating that she should retire in the same rank as Inspector (Madiwala Police Station).

The bench also questioned why other police personnel present at the station did not intervene when the incident occurred.

According to the petition, the incident dates back to February 23, 2025, when the advocate was travelling in her car and was allegedly intercepted by an autorickshaw driver, who damaged the vehicle by throwing a stone and breaking the window.

She went to the police station to file a complaint, but after being made to wait for around two hours, she allegedly created a disturbance inside the station. It is alleged that during this time, officer Padmavathi assaulted her by kicking her.

Jaipur (PTI): A student preparing for the NEET examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a rented room in Rajasthan's Sikar on Friday, police said.

According to the police, the student allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using his sister's scarf while one sister was attending coaching classes and the other was in the bathroom.

He had appeared in the NEET UG exam 2026, which was cancelled due to paper leak, they said.

Udyog Nagar SHO Rajesh Kumar said that the deceased, identified as Pradeep Meghwal, was a resident of Kanika ki Dhani village in Jhunjhunu's Gudha Gaudji area.

He had been living in a rented room in Sikar's Jaldhari Nagar area with his two sisters while preparing for NEET over the last three years.

His elder sister later found him hanging and informed the landlord and police after bringing him down, officials said.

The SHO said the body was kept at SK Hospital mortuary, and a postmortem had not been conducted.

The student's father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, told police that Pradeep's NEET examination had gone well and the family was expecting him to score around 650 marks.

Former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot expressed grief over the incident and linked it to anxiety among students after reports of irregularities and paper leaks in NEET 2026.

Pilot said repeated paper leak incidents and cancellation of examinations were affecting students' mental health and demanded a time-bound investigation and strict action against those responsible.
