Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has quashed a criminal case against a woman named Afreen and her friend, following a complaint by Afreen’s husband, who had accused her of attempting to kill him through black magic.

Justice M. Nagaprasanna presided over the case and declined to quash a separate criminal case accusing the husband, Mohammad Shahid, of cruelty and demanding dowry, which was based on a complaint filed by Afreen. However, the judge did quash the proceedings against Shahid’s mother, Hoornaz Banu, according to a report by the Times of India.

The High Court noted that the case against Afreen was a matter of marital discord, with allegations of black magic, theft, and attempted murder being added to it. The couple, who married in June 2018 and have two children, saw their relationship deteriorate over the years. Shahid had filed two cases of theft involving money and jewelry in 2020 and 2021, but the police closed both cases after failing to find any evidence.

As the relationship between Afreen and Shahid worsened in 2022, they filed cases against each other, including disputes over the custody of their children. Shahid allegedly lodged a police complaint against Afreen and her friend Shabaz Masoom after discovering a WhatsApp chat between them. The complaint accused Afreen and Shabaz of theft and performing black magic to harm Shahid and his mother. Both parties eventually approached the Karnataka High Court, challenging the proceedings initiated against them.
