Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has directed that elections for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) be held on 7 December under the supervision of retired High Court judge and former Upa Lokayukta, Justice Subhash B. Adi. The order was issued by a single-judge bench of Justice Suraj Govindaraj while disposing of petitions filed by KSCA and B. K. Ravi.

The petitioners had challenged the decision of the Election Officer to postpone the polls, originally scheduled for 30 November to 30 December due to certain procedural confusions. The Court set aside the notice issued by the Election Officer on 17 November and instructed that the election be conducted transparently as per the existing KSCA by-laws, without being influenced by any disputed interpretations.

The Court fixed the polling to take place on 7 December from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., followed by the announcement of results. The bench also requested the supervision of Justice Subhash B. Adi to ensure fairness in the electoral process.

Nomination filing has already concluded, and scrutiny will take place on 24 November. The list of valid candidates must be published by 6 p.m. on the same day. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw nominations on 26 November, after which the final list of contestants must be released.

Senior advocates Jayakumar A. Patil and Uday Holla, appearing for the petitioners, argued that minor changes to the schedule were necessary to resolve issues created by the 17 November notice. They further noted that delays could affect the participation of the state’s teams in cricket tournaments and may even lead to the appointment of an administrator under the Societies Act.

Appearing for the Election Officer, senior advocate K. N. Phanindra assured the court that the polls would be conducted strictly in accordance with the revised schedule and under judicial supervision.

With these directions, the High Court disposed of the petitions.

Melbourne (PTI): Former Australian hockey player Michael Nobbs, who coached the Indian men's team at the 2012 London Olympics, has died after a prolonged illness.

He was 72 years old and is survived by his wife Lee Capes, a former Australian women's international and daughter Kaitlin, who is a current Hockeyroos star.

"Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends, former teammates, players and all those whose lives and careers were shaped by his contribution to hockey. He will be remembered as a proud Kookaburra, a respected professional, and a servant of the sport," Hockey Australia said in a statement.

Nobbs represented Australia as a defender, playing across the half-back line and at fullback, and was renowned for his reliability, fitness and professionalism. He earned 76 international caps for Australia between 1979 and 1985, scoring one goal, and was a member of one of the strongest eras in Australian men’s hockey, said Hockey Australia on its website in its tribute.

Nobbs was an integral part of the Australian teams that competed at the 1981 Hockey World Cup in Bombay and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

While part of a generation widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest, he consistently held his place through hard work, discipline and trust earned from teammates and coaches, Hockey Australia wrote.

Nobbs took over the coaching of the Indian men's team in 2011 after it had failed to qualify for the Beijing Games in 2008. While India were brilliant in the qualifiers, the team finished last at the London extravaganza which also expedited the Australian coach's sacking.

Apart from India, Nobbs also coached Japan.
