Raichur: A leopard that had been terrorizing the residents of Maliabad village by preying on their livestock was finally captured on Tuesday morning in a trap set by forest officers. The capture has brought relief to the villagers, who had been living in fear for months.

The leopard was caught around 7:30 AM in a trap placed by the Forest Department in the outskirts of Raichur town. The big cat had been responsible for the deaths of several cattle, including a calf on December 11 and another on February 14. Despite multiple efforts by forest officials, previous attempts to capture the animal had been unsuccessful.

Frustrated by the repeated loss of livestock and the continued threat posed by the leopard, villagers had openly criticized the Forest Department for its inability to resolve the issue. Some even warned that they would escalate the matter to the Forest Minister and threatened to take matters into their own hands if the leopard was not captured soon.

Responding to the concerns of the villagers, forest officials intensified their efforts in mid-February. Based on leopard tracks found near the village, they placed traps at three different locations and deployed personnel to monitor the area. Villagers were advised to remain indoors during twilight hours and to avoid tying their cattle near forested areas after sunset. Additionally, CCTV cameras were installed to track the animal’s movements.

The efforts of the Forest Department finally paid off when the leopard was found trapped in one of the enclosures on Tuesday morning.
