Bengaluru: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has directed gram panchayats across Karnataka to prepare by March 10, 2025 a budget on the grants available and the development projects planned for the coming financial year, and present it in the panchayat meetings for approval.

Kharge, in a letter to the Additional Chief Secretary of Panchayat Raj, has stated that gram panchayats would be given the opportunity to raise the own resources other than the statutory grants of the Central and state governments as well as the financial assistance given by the state government under various schemes. He added that, therefore, the panchayats would have to prepare their own budgets and request approval for the budgets.

Gram panchayats have prominence in a system of decentralization with the Constitution stating that panchayats should function at village-level similar to governments. In line with the Constitutional, gram panchayats, which comprise elected representatives, should prepare budgets for their various programmes meant to serve the citizens, the minister explained.

Kharge added in his letter that presidents of gram panchayats should, therefore, display greater responsibility by readying and presenting the budget in accordance with rules regarding coverage for expenses and also getting approval for the budget.

Bengaluru: Organisers of the ‘Karnataka Muslim Convention’ have clarified that the programme will be held as scheduled on Saturday, May 16, at 10.30 am at Town Hall in Bengaluru, and urged the public not to pay attention to rumours regarding any change in the event.

In a joint statement, convention coordinators Suhail Ahmed Maroor, Tanveer Ahmed and Yahya Damudi said there is no change whatsoever in the programme and that all preparations are in the final stage.

The convention is being organised by the Karnataka Rajya Muslim Sanghatanegala Okkoota.

According to the organisers, more than 45 Muslim organisations, associations and jamaats from different parts of Karnataka have extended support to the event and have assured active participation.

The organisers said the state government has withdrawn the restriction on hijab, but noted that nine other major demands of the Muslim community are still pending.

They said the convention is being held to urge the government to fulfil these constitutional demands without further delay.
