Vijayapura: Gandhi Chowk Police have arrested four men who were accused of murdering criminal Bhagappa Hucchappa Harijan in a clash in Madina Nagar on Tuesday night.

The arrested men, Prakash, also called Pintya Agarakhed Melinakeri (25), Rahul Talakeri (20), Gadigeppa, also known as Manikantha Danakoppa (27), and Sudeep Kamble (23), attacked the notorious criminal Bhagappa Harijan with machetes and shot at him in Madina Nagar on Tuesday night. Bhagappa Harijan was grievously injured in his chest, neck and hands and died on the spot, Vijayapura Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi has said.

He added that the Gandhi Chowk police officers had registered a case based on a complaint filed by Gangubai Bhagappa Harijan, daughter of the assault victim, and probed the incident. More than 10 police cases had been filed against Bhagappa Harijan, including one murder case at the Afzalpur Police Station and six other murder cases at other police stations.

Bhagappa Harijan was a relative of one of the arrested men, Prakash. The two men had clashes in relation to the murder of Prakash’s brother Ravi Melinakeri and property matters, the SP said.

Nimbargi explained that Ravi was murdered in Vijayapura in August 2024 by Tulasiram Harijan and his associates Alex Gollar, Shanmukh Naduvinakeri, Prakash Gollar, Murugesh Ullagaddi and Rajesh Rudrawadi, with Bhagappa Harijan being accused of supporting Tulasiram Harijan. After the death of Ravi, Bhagappa Harijan communicated with Prakash and demanded that Ravi’s property be handed over to him. He also threatened Prakash over the property matter and demanded that Ravi’s wife be handed over to him if Prakash failed to give the property.

Prakash was convinced by such threats that Bhagappa Harijan had gotten his brother killed and planned to avenge the murder of his brother. On the night of Tuesday, February 11, Prakash and his friends attacked and killed Bhagappa Harijan when he was walking outside his house, the SP said.

The senior officer also said that the weapons and vehicles that had been used by the murder accused were confiscated by the police, adding that the police are investigating the incident further.

Bengaluru (PTI): Two men were arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two minor girls, recording the acts on mobile phones and uploading the videos online as child sexual abuse material, police said on Thursday.

The accused have been identified as Kiran Kumar (29), hailing from Chitradurga district, and Aditya M K (20), hailing from Shivamogga district, they said.

A probe was initiated after information was received from the NCRP portal regarding a suspected instance of creation of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) for online dissemination, police said.

Accordingly, a case was registered at Kaggalipura Police Station under relevant sections of the IT Act on May 10, they added.

Investigation revealed that two minor girl victims were exploited and videos were created and uploaded to the internet. The child victims have subsequently recorded their statements as per procedure and further necessary legal steps have been taken, Pronab Mohanty Director General of Police, Cyber Command, said in a statement.

Based on the statements of the victims, the accused persons, who allegedly assaulted the minors, recorded the acts on mobile phones and uploaded the videos online, were arrested, he said.

Following the probe, sections 65(2) (rape) and 70 (gangrape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant sections of the POCSO Act, have been added to the FIR, police said.

Officials collected relevant information and on May 12, arrested the accused persons and seized three mobile phones belonging to them, in which the videos had allegedly been recorded, he said.

The accused were later produced before the court and taken into police custody for further investigation, he added.

According to him, in CSAM cases, police usually apprehend offenders who have downloaded such content or have kept them in their possession after obtaining them from elsewhere, usually the internet.

"The present case is one of the very few instances where content creators and uploaders have been apprehended," Mohanty added.
