Names of Christian voters missing from electoral roll: B'lore Archdiocese asks CEO for new roll
Bengaluru: J A Kanthraj, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, has asked the chief electoral officer of Karnataka to release new electoral rolls as the names of several Christians were deleted from the Final Electoral Roll-2023 in the Shivajinagar constituency.
In a recent letter to the officer, the spokesperson has pointed out, “On a close scrutiny and verification, we observe that a large number of names belonging to our Christian Community are missing. Of the total number of 9,195 names about 8,000 names that include voters from the SC, Backward Classes and the Muslim Communities are missing.”
Expressing shock at the deletion, the spokesperson says, “It is unfathomable and unbelievable that out of 193 booths, 91 of them have been selectively picked up and the names that were under the voters' lists those booths are deleted, where a large number of minorities reside in these pockets. The damage caused is improbable to be believed!”
He expresses fear of a possibility of such deletion occurring in the lists of other constituencies too, pointing out that, if no action is taken in such cases of tampering, it would result in the people losing faith in the electoral procedure.
The spokesperson requests the chief electoral officer for timely intervention and prompt rectification to restore the people’s trust in the election machinery.
He says in his letter, “On behalf of the Christian Community in particular, and the Minority Communities in general, we appeal to your good self to kindly intervene and arrange to notify a revised, error free and updated electoral rolls at the earliest.”

Indian crew killed in 'unfortunate' maritime incident: Indian mission in Dubai
Dubai (PTI): An Indian crew member was killed in an "unfortunate" maritime incident, the Indian mission said on Friday, extending assistance.
The Indian Consulate in Dubai did not give much information about the incident but said it was "saddened to learn of the unfortunate incident at Sea that caused the tragic death of an Indian crew of a ship".
In a post on X, the Consulate said it was in touch with the ship's owner and is ascertaining further details.
"The Consulate will render all possible assistance in this matter on priority. Our deepest condolences," it said.
