Bengaluru: In a significant boost for aspiring doctors, Karnataka will see the addition of 400 MBBS seats, which will be incorporated into the second round of seat allotment.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned the increase, granting 50 additional seats to each of eight government medical colleges, including the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences, Chikkaballapur Institute of Medical Sciences, and Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences-Kalaburagi, as reported by Deccan Herald on Wednesday.
The decision follows a request from the state government, which sought approval for expanding medical seat capacity at various institutions.
Though Karnataka had initially requested the enhancement of seats at 15 government medical colleges, the NMC declined to approve the expansion at seven institutes—Bidar, Chamarajanagar, Gadag, Karwar, Koppal, Mandya, and Shivamogga—due to infrastructural concerns. Additionally, while the state government had requested 100 new seats each for the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Centre, the NMC approved only 50 seats for each.
Furthermore, the NMC has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats at JGMMMC Hubli, a deemed-to-be university.
With this, the total seats available in Karnataka has crossed 9,663 as against the earlier sanctioned seats of 9,263, added the report.
Regarding the seat allotment process, Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) officials clarified that the newly approved seats will not be available for fresh option entry.
“The students who have got medical seats in round 1 and opted choice 2 and paid course fees, and those who have opted choice 3 and paid caution deposit, the system will consider them for allotment automatically,” DH quoted KEA Executive Director Prasanna H as saying.
KEA will add these seats and re-run the system. “Now, there are high chances of colleges allotted in the provisional results will be changed with the addition of 400 seats,” added the official.
