Dharwad, May 11: Noted writer and critic Giraddy Govindaraj passed away due to cardiac arrest here on Friday. Soon after suffering heart attack, he was rushed to a hospital. But he breathed his last on the way to hospital. He was 79.

He was born in Abbigeri in Rona taluk of Gadag district in 1939. Being a writer and critic, he has given various works to Kannada literature. He was retired as Karnataka University English department head. He has got various awards including Kendra Sahitya Academy award. He was residing at Kalyananagar of Dharwad.

Kolkata: A massive fire broke out in the Ultadanga area of Kolkata on Sunday morning, leaving more than 10 houses gutted. The fire reportedly started around 7:30 am.

Six fire tenders were deployed to the site to control the fire. Efforts to douse the fire are ongoing, and authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the incident.
