Bengaluru: In a significant development for the tribal communities in the deep forests of Chamarajanagar district, more than 1,800 households are reportedly set to receive permanent electricity for the first time. Officials have reportedly noted that the project, which aims to enhance the quality of life for these residents, is being executed with their consent.
The initiative, spearheaded by the district administration at a cost of Rs 42 crore, will utilise underground cables for power supply, as reported by Deccan Herald on Monday. This decision was made after the forest department rejected plans for overhead cabling. Once connected to the power grid, lamps will illuminate streets and allow households to enjoy the conveniences that come with having electricity, such as operating home appliances or any other equipment.
Shilpa Nag, the Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar, explained that previous attempts to provide independent solar connections were limited in scope and challenging to maintain due to the remote and forested locations of these households. "Through this comprehensive project, we want to enable full electrification to benefit nearly 1,854 tribal households living in remote parts so they can enjoy a better quality of life. All of this is happening with their consent and necessary permissions,” Shilpa was quoted as saying by the news outlet.
She further noted that, under the Chief Minister's direction, the work has been accelerated, adding that cabling is expected to commence within the next 15 days and be completed within four months.
The district administration worked with the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) and the forest department over the past six months to develop the proposal and secure the required approvals. The project is reportedly in its final stages of obtaining forest clearance from the forest department, which is clearing each of the nine proposals that covers 22 haadis (settlements).
Santhosh Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, MM Hills Division in Kollegal, noted that approvals for two remaining areas are pending but will be done soon. The proposals have been carefully modified to minimise disturbance to animal corridors.

The incident occurred at a middle school in Baluaha village of the district.
The official said that 115 children were undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital, while around 50 students were admitted to Mahishi Public Health Centre.
“We received information that several children fell ill after consuming the mid-day meal in Baluaha. The children were initially treated at the primary health centre, but later, many were referred to the Sadar Hospital,” Saharsa District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar told reporters.
“According to doctors, the health condition of the children has improved, but they will be kept under observation for some time. There is no need to panic. Some kids are having mild fever. They are being treated accordingly,” Kumar said.
Meanwhile, family members of some children claimed that a snake was found in the container in which cooked pulses was stored at the school.
Of the 545 students present in the school, 200 had already eaten their meals by the time the snake was spotted, and later complained of stomach ache and vomiting, they said.
Regarding the claims, the DM said food samples have been collected from the school.
“We will be able to comment on this only after the results of the tested samples arrive,” he said.
