Pick candidates with corruption-free image to project alternative to BJP, Moily tells Congress
Bengaluru(PTI): Senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday urged the party leadership to field only candidates with corruption-free image in the coming Assembly elections in Karnataka to help project an "alternative" to the BJP in the State.
The former Chief Minister claimed that his party's prospects in the polls are "very bright" and alleged that Ministers in the Basavaraj Bommai Cabinet and ruling party MLAs were facing "anti-incumbency".
The Congress has in recent months stepped up its attack on the government on corruption issues, which are also likely to be its dominant campaign themes for the election, due by May.
"...good people with image...with corruption-free image should be selected because this is the alternative we can show", Moily told PTI here.
"Candidates with corruption-free image will definitely project what we intend to do in future", the former Union Minister added.
He said the fact that the Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge hails from the State, is a "big status" for the party and its leadership as it faces elections.
Moily said the poll promises of the Congress to provide 200 units of free power a month to each household, and Rs 2000 to every woman head of households would give electoral dividends for the party.
He also targeted the JD (S) headed by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.
"Whenever they came to power, they failed in governance. Corruption also increased during their regime. JD(S) has become fully marginalised", Moily claimed.

BJP has history of ‘contradictory alliances’, says BK Hariprasad
Bengaluru: Congress MLC B. K. Hariprasad has launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing the party of hypocrisy over its criticism of alliance politics in Tamil Nadu.
In a post on X on Friday, Hariprasad said BJP leader B. L. Santhosh criticising the Congress party’s alliance politics in Tamil Nadu was “not just laughable, but the height of political contradiction.”
He said the Congress has always joined hands with like-minded parties to protect secular and democratic values in the country.
Hariprasad questioned the BJP over several of its past and present alliances across the country. Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Tripura, Bihar and Maharashtra, he accused the BJP of sharing power with parties it had earlier criticised.
He alleged that the BJP had aligned with separatist and corruption-linked political forces in different states for political gains.
“The BJP, which speaks against alliances today, should first look at its own political history,” he said, adding that the party’s record was full of “contradictions and changing stands.”
Hariprasad also accused the BJP of using central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax Department and CBI as political tools to target opposition leaders, topple governments and influence electoral mandates.
He further claimed that the people of Tamil Nadu had strongly rejected the BJP and its ideology in the recent election.
“Congress forms alliances to protect the Constitution, secularism and national unity, while the BJP enters into alliances only for power,” he said.
