Hubballi: Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka has questioned the legal requirement for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to be registered as an organization, while accusing the state government of using the ongoing RSS controversy to divert public attention from its administrative lapses.
Speaking to reporters in Hubballi on Thursday, Ashok said, “Is there any law that says the RSS must register itself? The government is unnecessarily trying to create controversy.” He alleged that Minister Priyank Kharge was attempting to politicize the issue and demanded that Kharge reveal the funding sources of the Congress Party before questioning the RSS.
Calling the RSS an organization that “promotes patriotism,” Ashoka said that the outfit does not operate through any registered buildings or formal structures. “If there are questions about any organization, there are proper legal channels to address them. The government is using this as a smokescreen to hide its failures,” he remarked.
Referring to reports that several organizations had sought permission to hold marches in Chittapur on the same day, Ashoka said the law allows all groups — including Dalit, Lingayat, or Vokkaliga communities to organize processions. “We have no objection even if the Bhim Army holds an event,” he said.
Ashoka also launched a sharp attack on the ruling Congress, alleging that law and order has deteriorated under its governance. “Since this government came to power, Karnataka has witnessed a surge in crimes like murder, robbery, and assault. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has become inactive, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar is misusing his authority, and Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar has shown no initiative. The state is being run without prudence or discipline,” Ashoka alleged.

Jaipur (PTI): A student preparing for the NEET examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a rented room in Rajasthan's Sikar on Friday, police said.
According to the police, the student allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using his sister's scarf while one sister was attending coaching classes and the other was in the bathroom.
He had appeared in the NEET UG exam 2026, which was cancelled due to paper leak, they said.
Udyog Nagar SHO Rajesh Kumar said that the deceased, identified as Pradeep Meghwal, was a resident of Kanika ki Dhani village in Jhunjhunu's Gudha Gaudji area.
He had been living in a rented room in Sikar's Jaldhari Nagar area with his two sisters while preparing for NEET over the last three years.
His elder sister later found him hanging and informed the landlord and police after bringing him down, officials said.
The SHO said the body was kept at SK Hospital mortuary, and a postmortem had not been conducted.
The student's father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, told police that Pradeep's NEET examination had gone well and the family was expecting him to score around 650 marks.
Former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot expressed grief over the incident and linked it to anxiety among students after reports of irregularities and paper leaks in NEET 2026.
Pilot said repeated paper leak incidents and cancellation of examinations were affecting students' mental health and demanded a time-bound investigation and strict action against those responsible.
