State govt will approach SC like Tamil Nadu if Governor rejects bills: Minister Priyank Kharge
Bengaluru: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge said on Tuesday that the state government will be forced to fight against the Governor, like the Tamil Nadu government did, if the bills passed by the Karnataka government continued to be rejected by Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot.
The Governor has returned to the government the Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University Bill, which focuses on replacing the Governor as the head of universities, asking for clarifications from the government.
Addressing reporters in the city on Tuesday, Minister Kharge said the government had faced similar rejection from the Governor earlier too. It had also witnessed similar situations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where the Governor had returned bills passed in the legislature. Admitting that the government would provide the necessary clarifications to Gehlot, Kharge said that, if the Governor was still not convinced, the state government would have to approach the Supreme Court ‘like Tamil Nadu did’.
He accused the Governor of violating the legislature’s decisions and causing a feud between the Governor and the government. He also pointed out that a bill was discussed in the legislature and passed through a voting system.
Kharge, who is spokesperson for the Karnataka government, further alleged that the BJP and the RSS were using the Governor’s office as the branch office of the party and state headquarters of the Sangh. He also accused Governor Gehlot of ‘murdering’ democracy by following the orders of the Central government and overruling the decisions of the Karnataka Legislature.

5 killed, 11 injured after mini bus rams into parked truck in Kalaburagi
Kalaburagi (PTI): Five people, including a 13-year-old girl, died and 11 others were injured after a mini bus they were travelling in allegedly rammed into a parked truck near Nelogi Cross in Jewargi taluk of this district in the wee hours of Saturday, police said.
The passengers, all residents of Bagalkote, were en route a dargah in the Kalaburagi district when the accident occurred at around 3.30 AM, they said.
According to the police, the truck whose tyre got punctured was parked on the left side of the road. The driver was busy changing the tyre when the mini bus carrying passengers to dargah hit the truck from behind.
The impact of the accident was such that five people died on the spot while several other passengers were injured, A Srinivasulu, Superintendent of Police of Kalaburagi, said.
Citing preliminary inquiry, another police officer said that the driver of the mini bus, which was allegedly speeding, fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle and ended up hitting the parked truck.
Those injured have been shifted to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment, he said.
Initially, police thought that the driver of the mini bus must have fled the spot after the accident, only to later find him lying on the road in a pool of blood. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital and is stated to be in a critical condition, police said.
A case has been registered for causing death due to negligence under section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and further investigation is underway
