Bengaluru: The BBMP Powrakarmika Sangha and Karnataka Pragatipara Powrakarmikara Sangha on Monday congratulated all powrakarmikas who were on strike for four consecutive days, after which the state government agreed to their demands for permanent jobs and other benefits.

“The powrakarmikas across 31 districts in Karnataka relentlessly fought for their demands over the past four days, whereas thousands of workers gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. The powrakarmikas who have been working in undignified working conditions, and are treated with disrespect fought for their rights and have emerged victorious today” an official press statement stated.

The Karnataka Government has agreed to make their jobs permanent after setting up a committee that will include representatives of powrakarmika unions, which will come up with the appointment rules. The committee will also look into the implementation of ‘equal pay for equal work’ for the workers. In pursuance of this, the legislative assembly will propose a special law in the upcoming assembly session.

“While auto drivers, helpers, and loaders will be brought under the direct-payment system in all other districts of Karnataka in a phased manner, those in BBMP will continue to remain under the exploitative sham contract system. Our Union will continue to fight against illegal and exploitative contract system and will continue to strive towards ensuring rights and dignity for all” the release further added.

The government has also agreed to implement the IPD Salappa report in terms of the population to workers ratio, as also provide scholarships for children of powrakarmikas, and implement a housing scheme, and maternity benefits, among other service benefits.

Saharsa (PTI): More than 150 children were taken ill after allegedly consuming food that was part of the mid-day meal in a school in Bihar’s Saharsa district, a senior official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at a middle school in Baluaha village of the district.

The official said that 115 children were undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital, while around 50 students were admitted to Mahishi Public Health Centre.

“We received information that several children fell ill after consuming the mid-day meal in Baluaha. The children were initially treated at the primary health centre, but later, many were referred to the Sadar Hospital,” Saharsa District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar told reporters.

“According to doctors, the health condition of the children has improved, but they will be kept under observation for some time. There is no need to panic. Some kids are having mild fever. They are being treated accordingly,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, family members of some children claimed that a snake was found in the container in which cooked pulses was stored at the school.

Of the 545 students present in the school, 200 had already eaten their meals by the time the snake was spotted, and later complained of stomach ache and vomiting, they said.

Regarding the claims, the DM said food samples have been collected from the school.

“We will be able to comment on this only after the results of the tested samples arrive,” he said.
