Iowa (USA): Dr. Megan Laxmi Srinivas, an infectious disease physician based in the United States of America won the election for the Iowa House District 30 that was held on Tuesday, November 8.

Srinivas’ parents Dr. Javarayya Srinivasappa and mother Dr. Geetha belong to a farming family from Kodagihalli in Kunigal taluk in Karnataka. Both are veterinary scientists who studied at the University of Agriculture in Bangalore and have been living in America for the past 40 years.

A democratic candidate Dr. Megan secured a thumping victory over her Republican rival Jerry Cheevers in the election. Srinivas will represent the south side of Des Moines after becoming the first South Asian ever to hold the post.

Srinivas got 63.7% of the votes and Cheevers, 36.3% of the votes in the election.

“I’m so honored that the Southside is trusting me to be their voice in the State Capitol,” Srinivas said. “I have served my community through my work in healthcare, and I look forward to bringing my experience to the legislature. I’m ready to get to work.”

The newly drawn District 30 was previously represented by Bruce Hunter who announced his retirement last year. The 90th General Assembly of the Iowa Legislature will begin on Jan. 9, 2023.

Mangaluru: Two girl students drowned while bathing near the Kolyadakatta dam area of the Gundya river on Friday evening here in the Kadaba Taluk of the district.

The deceased have been identified as Arpita (15) and Sunita (21), both residents of Vimalagiri in Kutrupadi village.

According to reports, five girl students had visited the river along with their friends as it was a holiday. While bathing in the river, the two students reportedly entered a deeper portion of the water without realising the depth and began drowning.

Those accompanying them tried to rescue the duo, but were unsuccessful, leading to the tragedy.

After receiving information about the incident, Kadaba Police Station personnel visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The bodies were later recovered with the help of local residents.
