Vijayapura: An FIR has been filed against legislator Basanagouda Patil Yatnal for making derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad during the Rama Navami programme in Hubballi recently.

The Gol Gumbaz Police have filed the FIR based on a complaint given by one Mohammed Hannan Shaikh that the MLA had insulted Prophet Muhammad and Islam. The MLA is also accused of making provocative statements on the occasion.

The complainant has told the police that, while speaking during a Rama Navami programme held at Bani Oni in Hubballi on April 7, Yatnal had said, “Muhammad Paigambar was born in Balasaheb Thackeray’s house.”

Calling the statement baseless and derogatory on religious grounds, Shaikh added that the MLA had insulted the feelings of Muslims by such words. The statement was also provocative and could give rise to communal disharmony, the complainant has said.
