Mandya, July 17: In a bid to prove his challenge, a youth plunged into the Hemavati River on Tuesday afternoon and swept away in the flowing water near Akkibalu in KR Pete taluk.
The victim is identified as Shivu, son of Ganesh of Hariharpur in KR Pete taluk. He is survived by two children. It is said that he has been to the river along with his friends to see its beauty. But he challenged his friends that he would swim the overflowing river and jumped into the river from the bridge. His friends observed his swimming and they went to the shore thinking that he would reach the shore safely. But he failed to swim in the current and swept away in the river. His friends recorded his fighting for survival in the river and uploaded in the social media which has gone viral.
Fire brigade which suspected that he might have died, continued its search operation. Tahsildar Shivamurthy camped in the place.

Kasaragod: A 35-year-old man who was riding on a scooter on the National Highway 66 stretch in Thuminadu, Manjeshwara, on Tuesday, reportedly died on the spot in a collision between a truck and his two-wheeler.
The accident victim, identified as Kalpesh U, was a resident of Aila in Uppala of Kasaragod district. He was reportedly traveling to a paper mill on KC Road, Uppala, where he was employed, when the accident occurred. Kalpesh is learned to have been killed on spot due to the intensity of the collision.
A case has been registered at the Manjeshwara Police Station and investigation is going on. Kalpesh’s body is currently kept in the mortuary of the Mangalpady Government Hospital.
