Beijing: A 64-year-old man, identified as Yang, had a 17-centimeter toothbrush lodged in his small intestine for over five decades.
Yang, visited a hospital after complaining of abdominal discomfort. During a routine examination of digestive system, medical staff discovered a 17-centimetre toothbrush lodged in one his small intestine.
Yang later recalled swallowing the toothbrush at the age of 12 accidently. Out of fear, he never told his parents and believed it would eventually dissolve or pass on its own. Until recently doctors at the hospital carried out an endoscopic procedure lasting approximately 80 minutes to safely extract the object. Medical staff called it was the longest such retrieval they had performed in the past three years.
As news spread on social media, many called him "extremely lucky," while many others said it could have led to life-threatening complications.
Earlier in a similar case in 2019, a man in Guangdong province underwent surgery to remove a 14-centimetre toothbrush he had swallowed two decades ago in a suicide attempt.
