Manila, Sep 1 : Six villagers were killed by unidentified gunmen, who also abducted a Filipino couple in a Philippine town, police said on Saturday.
The gunmen broke into the couple's house in the coastal Sirawai town and took them hostage around 5 p.m. on Friday, Xinhua quoted police officer Edwin de Ocampo as saying.
A neighbour of the couple, who is attached to the military, tried to rescue the hostages but was killed.
Five more villagers were also gunned down by the attackers as they escaped, De Ocampo added. He said a child was also wounded in the crossfire.
A rescue operation is on.
This is the second abduction incident in Sirawai town this year.

Dubai: An explosion was heard over Dubai International Airport on Saturday, followed by a cloud of smoke in the air, according to a witness who spoke to AFP, as Iran continued attacks across the Gulf region.
The flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed several aircraft circling above the airport in what appeared to be a holding pattern.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Media Office said in a post on X that there had been “a minor incident resulting from the fall of debris after an interception.”
In the same post, authorities also denied reports circulating online about a direct strike on the airport.
Further details about the incident were not immediately available.
