Amsterdam: Hundreds of Israeli soccer fans were reportedly attacked on Thursday night in Amsterdam following the Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch club AFC Ajax.
According to reports, the assailants were carrying Palestinian flags and chanting 'Free Palestine'. They were allegedly forcing the Israeli fans to chant the same.
The Dutch police stated on Friday that 57 arrests were made in connection with the unrest. However, the authorities did not mention whether the attacks were driven by antisemitism, nor did they specify if the victims were deliberately targeted.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed of the details of "a very violent incident" targeting Israeli citizens in Amsterdam, his office said on Friday. He directed that two rescue planes be sent immediately to assist citizens there.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reported that Israeli fans tore down Palestinian flags and directed offensive chants at Palestine supporters.
