Florida: NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who returned to Earth on early Wednesday after spending nine months in space, will undergo a 45-day rehabilitation program to help them readjust to Earth's gravity.
According to NASA, the astronauts are expected to undergo an extensive rehabilitation program which is planned to be scheduled for two hours a day. The Astronaut Strength, Conditioning, and Rehabilitation (ASCR) program will begin on landing day and consists of three phases: an initial focus on mobility and muscle strengthening, followed by proprioceptive exercises and cardiovascular conditioning, and finally, the third and longest phase, which will focus on functional development.
According to an earlier research by NASA, the astronauts tend to face numerous health issues such as dizziness, nausea, bone loss, and weakened muscles.
While astronauts typically regain normal fitness levels within 45 days, recovery time varies based on individual physiology, sometimes taking months or even years.
As per NASA, the four astronauts of the Crew-9 mission will undergo various medical procedures before the rehabilitation program begin.
The program is customised for each astronaut based on test results, medical status, and mission roles.
