Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the United States would destroy Iran if any attempt was made to assassinate him, issuing one of his strongest warnings yet amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking in an interview on NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich Tonight, Trump said he had given what he described as “very firm instructions” to his advisers. “If anything happens, they’re going to wipe them off the face of this earth,” he said, adding that the entire country would be “blown up” in the event of such an attack.

The remarks followed earlier statements by the U.S. President in which he said contingency instructions were already in place to obliterate Iran should it be found responsible for an attempt on his life.

According to an AP report, Iran responded by issuing a direct warning against any action targeting its leadership. General Abolfazl Shekarchi, a spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, said Trump was fully aware of the consequences of any aggression toward Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Trump knows that if any hand of aggression is extended toward our leader, we will not only cut that hand, but we will also set fire to their world,” General Shekarchi said.
