Sydney: The world's largest crocodile in captivity has died at a wildlife sanctuary in Australia on Saturday. Cassius was believed to be over 110 years old.

Measuring nearly 5.5 metres (18 feet) in length and weighing close to one ton, Cassius was awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest crocodile in captivity in 2011.

Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat shared the news on Facebook, describing Cassius as "our beloved mate" and "a cherished member of our family." They noted that his condition had been declining since October 15, stating, "He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc."

Before his life in captivity, Cassius was known for hunting and eating cattle and for attacking boat propellers.

The group’s website highlights that the huge saltwater crocodile had been living there since 1987, after being transported from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles play a significant role in the local tourism industry.
