321 people died cleaning sewers, septic tanks since 2017, 22 such deaths in 2021: Govt
New Delhi, Feb 2: A total of 321 people, including 22 in 2021, died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks since 2017, the government said on Wednesday.
Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale said of the 321 deaths, compensation has been given to to 259 people.
According to the data, 93 deaths were recorded in 2017 and compensation was paid to 81 people, while 70 deaths were recorded in 2018 and 62 were paid compensation.
In 2019, a total of 117 deaths were recorded and 80 people were paid compensation, while in 2020 as many as 19 deaths were reported and 14 were paid compensation.
Last year, 22 people died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks and compensation was paid to all of them.

Three, including two children, killed in road mishaps in Kerala
Kasaragod/Thrissur (Kerala) (PTI): Three people, including two children, lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Kerala on Sunday, police said.
In the first incident, two children died, and three others were injured when the car they were travelling in reportedly collided with a state-owned KSRTC bus at Padannakkadu in Kasargod district around noon.
The deceased are Zainul Ruman (9) and Lehak Zainaba (12). The police said the car was completely mangled in the accident.
They added that the injured were rushed to the Kanhangad District Hospital for treatment.
In another incident, a 44-year-old man died after the motorcycle he was riding allegedly collided with a pickup van at Chazhur in Thrissur district.
The deceased has been identified as Soni, a resident of Pullazhi, Thrissur. His 14-year-old son, Antony, sustained injuries and has been admitted to a hospital, police said. The accident occurred at around 10.30 am on Sunday.
A case has been registered in connection with both incidents, they added.
