Chandigarh: In an effort to secure a government job, nearly 40,000 graduates and 6,000 postgraduates, and 1.2 lakh candidates who have studied up to class 12 have applied for sweeper positions to clean offices in government departments, corporations and civic bodies in Haryana. This job offers a monthly salary of about Rs 15,000.
According to a report published in Times of India, an overwhelming number of highly educated people have applied for the contractual position of sweeper through Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited (HKRN), the state government’s outsourcing agency.
The applicants come from diverse backgrounds. Among them is Manish Kumar, a postgraduate with a diploma in business studies, and his wife Roopa, a qualified teacher. “Even in private schools or companies, we barely get Rs 10,000 a month. Here, there's a glimmer of hope for regular employment in future. Plus, sweeping isn't a full-day job, so we can pursue other work during the day," Manish shared with TOI.
Similarly, Sumitra, a resident of Rohtak's Sukhpura Chowk, has encountered repeated setbacks in her efforts to secure a government job through the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC). For her, applying for this position represents a last resort. "This is the only job left that I could apply for with any hope of a positive response. My family has refused to fund further studies or coaching, so employment is my lone option now," Sumitra told the publication.
The situation has triggered criticism from opposition parties, with HKRN facing backlash for alleged non-transparency, inadequate remuneration, job insecurity, and the lack of reservation for various categories. The Haryana Congress highlighted the surge in applications as evidence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's failure to address the unemployment crisis.
