Gorakhpur: On Friday evening, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists allegedly attacked the vice-chancellor and the registrar of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University over alleged irregularities within the university. The incident occurred in Gorakhpur, the home turf of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Members of the ABVP, a student organization affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), vandalized the vice-chancellor's chamber and assaulted police personnel who attempted to control the mob. Vice-Chancellor Rajesh Singh, officiating Registrar Ajay Singh, several ABVP members, and police officers sustained injuries during the clash.

The unrest was triggered by university officials' refusal to meet with protesters addressing unresolved issues despite prior assurances from the vice-chancellor. Dean Satyapal Singh had earlier suspended four ABVP members for creating disturbances, further escalating tensions. When ABVP activists reached the vice-chancellor's chamber on Friday, they attacked him and vandalized his office.

The Indian Express reported that the situation deteriorated when police failed to calm the protesters, resulting in a decision to escort university officials to safety. However, the miscreants manhandled and injured the officiating registrar, Ajay Singh, hitting him with a blunt object on his head.

Ten ABVP members have been detained following the incident.
