Lucknow: The vice-chancellor and registrar of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University in Gorakhpur, the home turf of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, were attacked by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists on Friday evening, allegedly over irregularities in the university.

The ABVP activists allegedly attacked policemen who attempted to control the situation and also vandalized the vice-chancellor’s chamber, forcing the policemen to resort to lathi-charge to bring peace on campus.

University Vice-chancellor Rajesh Singh and Registrar Ajay Singh, a few members of the ABVP as well as a couple of policemen were injured. Ten ABVP workers have been detained by the police, said sources.

The student activists had been protesting on Friday on-campus, opposing alleged irregularities in the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University.

The ABVP members are learned to have been enraged that university officials refused to meet them and resorted to the violent acts.

The ABVP activists had protested on July 13 too, by burning an effigy of Rajesh Singh, after which, the vice-chancellor listened to their demands and assured them that the problems would be resolved soon. The work, however, was yet to be completed, sources in the ABVP have said.

Later, however, Dean Satyapal Singh ordered that four ABVP members be suspended, allegedly for creating ruckus. The protest on Friday was held in objection to the suspension order by the dean, but when the students tried to meet the vice-chancellor on Friday, he allegedly refused to hold talks with them.

The activists, who approached the vice-chancellor’s chamber at around 3 pm, attacked Rajesh Singh and also vandalized his chamber.

The policemen, who tried to intervene, also attempted to take the university officials to safety, but the student activists attacked the vice-chancellor and the registrar Ajay Singh.
