New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has informed that it will meet the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill to register its opposition. The AIMPLB also informed that it had urged opposition parties and NDA allies to reject the legislation, which it describes as "draconian and undemocratic.
AIMPLB also informed that in a recent meeting chaired by AIMPLB President Mawlana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, key leaders from various Muslim community organizations and members of the Legal Committee resolved to take immediate action against the Bill.
It further informed that the Board has since engaged in urgent discussions with political leaders across the spectrum, expressing deep concerns that the amendments would dilute the existing Waqf Act, facilitate the usurpation of Waqf properties, and diminish the authority of Waqf Boards by transferring powers to local administrative officials like Collectors and Patwaris.
As per the released statement Mawlana Fazlur Raheem Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the AIMPLB, emphasized that the Bill poses a significant threat to the integrity and management of Waqf properties, and warned that it could undermine the rights of the Muslim community. He also highlighted that letters have been sent to all Muslim MPs and other political figures, urging them to stand firm against the Bill.
The AIMPLB's efforts have reportedly resonated with many opposition parties, who have since rejected the Bill. The Board has expressed its appreciation for the MPs who have taken a stand in Parliament, advocating for the protection of minority rights and upholding constitutional principles.
Despite these developments, the AIMPLB acknowledges that the battle is far from over. The General Secretary has called on the Opposition to continue their efforts during the upcoming Joint Parliamentary Committee meetings, aiming to repeal what they consider the most harmful provisions of the Bill. The Board plans to meet with members of the Committee as soon as it is formed to convey their concerns directly.
The AIMPLB also intends to engage with Central government representatives to discuss the community’s stance. In a broader appeal, the Board has urged Muslims across the country to protect Waqf properties in their areas from encroachment and misuse, and to be vigilant in safeguarding these assets. Imams have been asked to raise awareness within their communities and to organize prayers for the protection of Waqf properties.
