Lucknow: With only hours left for counting of the Lok Sabha elections, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Monday night accused the Uttar Pradesh Police of illegally detaining opposition party workers to prevent them from participating in the vote counting on Tuesday, June 4.

The Former UP Chief Minister took to his official ‘X’ handle and said, “The honourable Supreme Court, the Election Chief @ECISVEEP @CEOUP and the Police Chief @dgpup @Uppolice should immediately take cognizance of the fact that in many districts of Uttar Pradesh, apart from Mirzapur, Aligarh, Kannauj, the District Magistrate and the Police Administration are illegally detaining the opposition political workers in their homes so that they cannot participate in the counting of votes tomorrow. Everyone has the right to protect their vote and this is even more so when a government is in power which has the audacity to rig the elections even in front of the cameras installed by the court.”

He further demanded the immediate release of all those detained and urged the government to avoid unethical practices.

“Such incidents should be stopped immediately and people detained administratively should be released immediately. When all political parties are working peacefully, the government and administration should also not do any such unethical work which may lead to public anger,” he added.

Furthermore he said, “It is hoped that such biased DM and administrative officers will be removed immediately and the counting of votes will be completed in a peaceful environment.”

The counting of votes for the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha election 2024 will begin at 8 am on Tuesday. Uttar Pradesh is the biggest state with 80 Parliamentary seats, and voted in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. The state saw a total voter turnout of 56.92 per cent.
