Video shows BMW car speeding at 230 kmph
Lucknow/Sultanpur, Oct 17: The four people who died in a BMW car crash on Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh last week appeared to be aiming at a speed of 300 kilometres per hour and were on Facebook Live as they reached 230 kmph.
In the chilling video that surfaced on social media, one of them is heard saying, "Charon marenge (All four of us will die)." The man at the wheel asks the fellow passenger to keep quiet so that he can drive.
The BMW hit a container-truck coming from the opposite side in the collision near Sultanpur on Friday. The four men were hurled out of the smashed car, which is now kept at Haliapur police station, an official said.
"Hit 300, we are going live. At least, it should be 290. The speed should be 300," one of the men is heard saying in the video clip.
As the driver slowed down after reaching the speed of 230 kmph, an occupant asked in Hindi, "Why are you applying the brakes. Don't slow down. If we slow down, we will not be able to pick up again."
District Magistrate Ravish Kumar and police officials, including Superintendent of Police Somen Burma, soon reached the spot.
Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) officials too arrived there.
Three of the victims were identified as Anand Prakash (35), resident of Dehri in Bihar, Akhilesh Singh (35) and Deepak Kumar (37), both from Aurangabad, Bihar. The authorities are trying to identify the fourth man, the DM said.
Officer-in-charge of Haliapur police station Ram Vishal Toman said a case has been registered against the container truck driver and search is on for him.
The expressway connecting Lucknow to Ghazipur district in eastern Uttar Pradesh was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021, ahead of the Assembly elections in February-March.
The speed limit on the expressway is 100 kmph, a UPEIDA official said.
"Advanced Time Management System (ATMS), which is aimed at detecting speeding violations, is being installed on Purvanchal Expressway. The system is operational on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway," the official added.
The ATMS sends a challan, seeking payment of a fine, to the vehicle owner if speeding is detected.
Ex-servicemen are also deployed to run patrol vehicles on the expressway to be on the lookout for speeding vehicles, he said.

Mamata’s decision not to quit part of her protest against Centre, EC: Raut
Mumbai (PTI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday backed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision not to quit after her defeat in the assembly polls, calling it a part of her protest against the Centre and the Election Commission of India.
Talking to reporters, Raut asserted that it is necessary to unite against the “dictatorship of the Centre and partisan behaviour of the Election Commission”. He said the poll body has become “slaves” of the Centre.
The Opposition has to decide whether it has to contest the polls or not, he said.
“Mamata Banerjee is not resigning is part of her agitation against the government (Centre), the Election Commission (EC) and a series of acts against democracy,” Raut said.
It has to be seen what direction the agitation takes, he added.
Alleging that the West Bengal assembly poll verdict was “not a people's mandate but a conspiracy”, Banerjee on Tuesday refused to resign as chief minister.
The BJP sealed a landslide victory with 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, ending the TMC’s uninterrupted 15-year rule. Banerjee dismissed the outcome as “engineered” and asserted that her party was fighting the Election Commission, not the BJP. The TMC could only manage 80 seats.
In a post on Facebook, Raut said Banerjee’s decision not to quit is fully justified. He also sought to draw a parallel with the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis.
The then Chief Justice of India had observed during hearings on petitions seeking the disqualification of rebel MLAs of the undivided Shiv Sena that Uddhav Thackeray, who headed the party at the time, could have been reinstated as chief minister had he not resigned, Raut said.
The Rajya Sabha MP said Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray had called up Banerjee after the polls and extended support. Almost all INDIA bloc leaders have called Banerjee and extended their support to her.
“We have to come together if we have to unite against the dictatorship of the Centre and the partisan behaviour of the EC or the way the poll body has become slaves of the government,” Raut said.
He claimed that even many in the government do not agree with the “degradation of democracy”.
