Hyderabad: Starting from today, Hyderabad officially ends its tenure as the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as per the provisions outlined in Section 5(1) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. This marks the culmination of a transition period that began on June 2, 2014, when Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for both states for a period not exceeding ten years.
With the conclusion of this period, Section 5(2) of the Act stipulates that Hyderabad will now solely serve as the capital of Telangana, while Andhra Pradesh is yet to establish a permanent capital. Ongoing disputes regarding the choice between Amaravati and Visakhapatnam are still pending in courts.
Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed intentions to designate Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Amaravati as the legislative seat, and Kurnool as the judicial capital, if his administration remains in power.
Although Andhra Pradesh ceased using Hyderabad as its capital shortly after the bifurcation in 2014, retaining only a few administrative buildings, this formal separation holds symbolic significance for both Telugu states, according to political observers.
