New Delhi: Fatima Nafees, mother of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, has vowed to continue her fight for justice after a Delhi court accepted the CBI’s closure report in June, eight years after his disappearance, Maktoob Media reported.

Speaking at a public meeting organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) at the Constitution Club on Wednesday, Fatima delivered an emotional address: “As long as I am alive, I will keep speaking out about what happened to my son. I don’t want there to be another Najeeb. With the support of students, we will not forget my son or let anyone forget.”

She recalled the solidarity shown by student movements and said she would challenge the closure report in the High Court. “Till the time I have strength, I will continue to fight for my Najeeb. Even if I am bedridden, my children, my soldiers, must carry this fight forward,” she said.

Najeeb, a first-year MSc Biotechnology student, went missing in October 2016 from outside his JNU hostel after being attacked by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Multiple investigations by Delhi Police, SIT, Crime Branch, and CBI have failed to trace him.

Political leaders, teachers, activists, and students who attended the event criticised the closure of the case as a systemic failure. RJD MP Manoj Jha said, “The right question is not ‘Where is Najeeb?’ but ‘Where is justice?’” JNUTA president Surajit Mazumdar called out the JNU administration’s indifference, while CPI(M) MP Sivadasan said Najeeb had become “a fighting force for justice.”

JNUSU leaders, including president Nitish Kumar, former president Aishe Ghosh, and general secretary Munteha Fatima, pledged to continue the struggle, alongside activists from SIO, Fraternity Movement, MSF, and IUML.

Civil rights activist Nadeem Khan compared Najeeb’s disappearance to enforced disappearances in Palestine and Syria, calling the judiciary’s handling of the case “a mockery.”

“This struggle is not just for Najeeb but for all minority and Muslim students who face discrimination,” JNUSU’s Munteha Fatima said, concluding the programme.

Shillong (PTI): An interstate racket involved in ATM thefts across several states has been busted, with the arrest of six persons in connection with a break-in at an electronic banking outlet in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused were allegedly involved in breaking into an ATM of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank on April 5, 2024, they said.

Three of the accused were arrested from Barpeta in Assam, while the remaining were apprehended from Haryana, police said.

Ri-Bhoi SP Giri Prasad M said a special police team was constituted to investigate the case.

"With coordinated efforts and assistance from Assam and Haryana Police, we were able to apprehend the accused involved in the ATM break-in," he told PTI.

The case was registered at Umiam police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the gang used gas cutters to break open the ATM safe and fled with the cash within minutes.

"The group is part of a larger network involved in similar ATM thefts across different states. Further investigation is underway to dismantle the entire network," the SP added.
