In today's world where everything works online, one has to be very careful and alert. These cybercriminals have started a new way of scamming people. They mainly target people who prefer digital routes for financial transactions.

Recently on April 26th, a similar incident occurred in Mangalore. An Instagram user @mangaloremerijaanofficial posted a picture, claiming that they would have been the victim of a malware attack, but luckily they were not.

@mangaloremerijaanofficial in their post wrote, "New Scam Alert- Got a Whatsapp message from unknown number that she has transferred 8,609 rupees to my account. When I checked gpay there was this image which doesn’t open by click. Later on I checked my bank statement & Gpay transaction history. No money received from this number. Kindly be aware of this."

Similar cases have occurred in many places.

Earlier this year, 81 Mumbaikars were looted around 1cr within a span of 16 days. These scammers have found a new way of scamming. At first, the scammer would knowingly send money to your account through an online payment app. Once you receive the money, the scammer would ask you to pay the money back, claiming it was sent by mistake.

Out of courtesy if you send the money back, your account will be hacked and you will become the victim of a cyberattack. So be alert and careful before doing any kind of online transactions.

“In this mix of malware plus human engineering scam, someone knowingly sends money to your account via mobile payment application gateway and calls you posing that the money was sent in your account by mistake and requests that you send the money back to their number. If you send the money back, you could become a victim of cybercrime," Pavan Duggal, a Delhi-based Cyberlaw expert was quoted as saying by livemint.com.

If someone sends you money and claims it was a mistake, as a precaution ask the caller to come to the nearest police station along with the id proof and collect the money through cash.

“Mobile payment application users to ask the caller to come to nearest police station and receive its money instead of giving the money back to the sender”, said Pavan Duggal.

There are a few guidelines to be followed to avoid online payment scams.

► Prefer cash payment over digital payment to make purchases or sales.

► It is better to transact only with people you know and trust.

► Never download apps or software for payments support

► Protect your personal financial details and other sensitive info
