Patna: In a key move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced 35% reservation for women who are permanent residents of the state in all categories and levels of government jobs.

The decision was approved during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Patna. “There will be 35% reservation exclusively for women candidates who are original residents of Bihar in direct recruitment to all categories and types of posts in state government services,” said Kumar.

Taking to social media, the CM stated that the step is aimed at ensuring greater participation of women in governance and public services.

The Cabinet also cleared the formation of a new statutory body, the Bihar Youth Commission, which will advise the state government on matters concerning youth welfare and empowerment. The commission will comprise a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, all below 45 years of age.

The Commission is tasked with ensuring better access to education and employment for local youth, prioritising their recruitment in the private sector, and protecting the interests of Bihari students and workers living outside the state. It will also recommend measures to tackle social issues such as alcohol and drug abuse.

The Nitish Kumar-led government said these initiatives are intended to make Bihar’s youth more skilled, self-reliant, and employment-ready.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
