Chennai: The state police have filed a case against K Annamalai, Tamil Nadu chief of the BJP, who blamed the DMK for the ongoing stir over the alleged attacks on migrant workers in the state.

The Cyber Crime police officers have charged Annamalai with inciting violence and promoting enmity between groups, among others, reports NDTV.

A case has also been registered against a BJP Bihar Twitter account holder over the incident, officials have said.

On Saturday, Annamalai released a statement on migrant labourers, saying that they were safe in Tamil Nadu, but the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister Stalin, and the parties in alliance were the reason for the hatred towards the workers.

He also opposed the spread of false news on attacks on natives of Bihar staying in Tamil Nadu, stating that Tamilians do not support ‘separatism’ or ‘vile hatred’ against North Indians.

"It is disheartening to see fake news spread in social media about attacks on Migrant workers in Tamil Nadu. We, the Tamil people, believe in the concept of "The World is One" and do not endorse the separatism and vile hatred against our North Indian friends," Annamalai posted on social media.

In an attack on the state government, he said that the comments on North Indians by the DMK MP, the DMK minister calling the people ‘Panipuri Walas’ and the allies demanding that the exodus of the Biharis from Tamil Nadu had triggered the attacks.

Annamalai also said that the people of the state, the government nor the police endorsed the views of the DMK and its allies.

The Tamil Nadu police also filed cases against four other persons.

Prashant Umrao, a BJP spokesperson; an editor with Dainik Bhaskar based in Patna; Mohammad Tanvir, who owns the Twitter handle ‘Tanvir Post’; and Shubham Shukla were booked at different police stations under charges of spreading fake news in relation to the attack on migrant workers in the state.

Several purported videos showing attacks on migrant workers were circulated on social media, which created statewide panic among the workers. The panicked workers kept away from work, which, in turn, affected the industries in the state.

The panic was triggered further after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar raised concern on Thursday, taking note of the videos.

Tamil Nadu DGP Sylendra Babu, taking action in backdrop of the panic, released a statement that the video going viral were ‘false’ and also ‘mischievous’.

He said, "Somebody in Bihar posted false and mischievous videos saying that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu. Two videos were posted. Both are false as these incidents happened at an earlier date in Tiruppur and Coimbatore. One was a clash between two groups of migrant workers from Bihar while another was from a clash between two local residents in Coimbatore."

The officer also said that the people behind the rumour-driven panic would not be spared.

Lucknow (PTI): The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday ordered a probe by the special task force (STF) into alleged irregularities in the rejoining of a teacher at City Intermediate College in Barabanki, observing that the reinstatement appeared to be prima facie illegal.

The court also directed the recovery of the salary paid to the teacher during the disputed period.

A bench of Justice Rajeev Singh passed the order on a petition filed by the college management committee. The court expressed doubts over the roles of the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS), Barabanki, the college principal and the teacher concerned and hence, directed a detailed inquiry into the matter.

Taking note of alleged manipulation of records and misleading submissions, the court ordered the immediate transfer of the Barabanki DIOS to ensure a fair probe. It also directed the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against the then joint director of education of the Ayodhya division.

In its order, the court found that the teacher, Abhay Kumar, was initially appointed as an assistant teacher in 2018 but joined an Eklavya Model Residential School in Chhattisgarh as a lecturer in June 2024 without obtaining permission from the management. His subsequent request to retain the lien was rejected.

Despite this, he was allowed to rejoin the Barabanki College in September 2025 on the directions of the joint director of education and the DIOS, and was even paid the salary for October 2025. The court termed the rejoining "wholly illegal" and lacking any legal basis.

The bench also expressed concern over lapses in communication within the education department and directed the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary to ensure that official orders are communicated through email and WhatsApp as well, to prevent disputes.

The matter is next listed for hearing on May 28 when a compliance report is sought.
