New Delhi: In preparations for the upcoming 8-day session of the Lok Sabha starting Monday, June 24, the BJP-led NDA is aiming to maintain control of the prestigious Speaker's position, according to sources.

Reports suggest that despite earlier speculations, the NDA is unlikely to cede this role to either JD(U) or TDP, both crucial allies in forming the current government. The BJP might instead offer the position of Deputy Speaker to an ally, in a strategic move to maintain harmony within the coalition. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has been entrusted with the task of consulting the NDA allies regarding this critical appointment.

The election for the Speaker's post is slated for June 26, with Kota MP Om Birla from the BJP having held the role in the 17th Lok Sabha.

The Speaker holds significant powers including the authority to disqualify members, manage parliamentary proceedings, and decide on Bill clearances through voice votes.

While there were earlier indications that the TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, might seek the Speaker's post as a bargaining chip for its support, recent reports suggest that internal deliberations within the BJP will precede any formal discussions with allies.

JD(U) leader KC Tyagi had earlier affirmed his party's and the TDP's commitment to support the BJP's nominee for Speaker, emphasizing unity within the NDA alliance.
