New Delhi: A recent C Voter survey has revealed that a majority of people in Bihar are standing behind Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding voter list irregularities. According to the findings, 60 percent of respondents agreed that Gandhi’s charge of “vote theft” reflects a genuine issue, while 67 percent said the Election Commission should respond properly to his concerns.

In an interview with News Tak, Yashwant Deshmukh, founder of C Voter, said the fear of names being cut off from the rolls has gripped voters across political lines. “This fear is there in the minds of people. Whether to a lesser or greater extent, but voters feel worried about whether their names will be removed. The opposition claims it is actually happening, while the Commission calls it a conspiracy. Until the final list is released on September 1, the fear will remain,” Deshmukh said.

He further noted that both the Election Commission and Congress have taken strong positions, but instead of resolving the matter, the exchanges appear to be escalating tensions. “The problem is not of process, but of intention. And there is no cure for doubt. It is up to the Election Commission to clear this fear from people’s minds,” he added.

On being asked about Rahul Gandhi’s recent political outreach, Deshmukh drew parallels with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which had initially been underestimated but later helped Congress in Karnataka and in parts of the Lok Sabha elections. He stressed that political campaigns on the ground always have an impact.

“Any effort done on the ground is never in vain. We saw it in the Bharat Jodo Yatra and also in campaigns led by Priyanka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh. Even if the immediate results were not big, such efforts build momentum over time. In Bihar too, these efforts are not going to waste,” Deshmukh said.

With assembly elections approaching, the survey indicates that Rahul Gandhi’s campaign is finding resonance among a significant section of the electorate in Bihar, particularly where Congress and RJD have a presence. The final voter list on September 1 is expected to be a decisive moment in addressing public doubts and clarifying the scale of alleged deletions.

Shillong (PTI): An interstate racket involved in ATM thefts across several states has been busted, with the arrest of six persons in connection with a break-in at an electronic banking outlet in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused were allegedly involved in breaking into an ATM of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank on April 5, 2024, they said.

Three of the accused were arrested from Barpeta in Assam, while the remaining were apprehended from Haryana, police said.

Ri-Bhoi SP Giri Prasad M said a special police team was constituted to investigate the case.

"With coordinated efforts and assistance from Assam and Haryana Police, we were able to apprehend the accused involved in the ATM break-in," he told PTI.

The case was registered at Umiam police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the gang used gas cutters to break open the ATM safe and fled with the cash within minutes.

"The group is part of a larger network involved in similar ATM thefts across different states. Further investigation is underway to dismantle the entire network," the SP added.
