New Delhi: The Central Government has convened a meeting of all Members of Parliament (MPs) on Wednesday to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The session, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Coordination Room No. 5 of the Parliament, will provide MPs with a one-hour briefing on the proposed amendments to Waqf laws.

The government aims to clarify the bill’s provisions ahead of its presentation in Parliament, amid growing opposition. The proposed amendments have sparked controversy, with various groups accusing the Centre of acting against the interests of the Muslim community.

Several Muslim organisations, including Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, have raised objections, warning that the amendments could lead to mismanagement of Waqf properties and undermine the autonomy of the community in managing its endowments. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has announced large-scale protests, with a demonstration scheduled in Patna’s Gardanibagh on March 26, followed by another in Vijayawada on March 29.

AIMPLB spokesperson Qasim Rasool Ilyas condemned the bill, calling it communal and alleging that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) ignored opposition parties and Muslim organisations during its review. The 31-member JPC proposed amendments, which were approved by a majority of 15 BJP MPs against 11 opposition members, leading to dissent from opposition leaders over the bill’s impact on Muslim religious and charitable institutions.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has officially announced that Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025, after the Shawwal crescent was sighted earlier this evening. The sighting marks the end of Ramadan, with the Islamic month concluding in 29 days this year.

Eid Al-Fitr falls on Shawwal 1, marking the conclusion of a month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims around the world. As per Islamic tradition, months last either 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon sighting.

Earlier, Saudi authorities had called upon citizens to observe the sky for the crescent on Ramadan 29 to determine the start of Shawwal. Following confirmed reports of the sighting, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia declared Sunday as the first day of Eid celebrations.
