Chennai: A police officer’s remark to a woman feeding stray dogs past midnight in Chennai’s Thiruvanmiyur has triggered widespread criticism after a video of the exchange surfaced online. The officer was heard telling the woman that “harassment happens” if women step out late at night.
According to reports, the woman has been feeding stray dogs in her neighbourhood for nearly two decades. On the night of the incident, two policemen stopped her while she was distributing food. During the heated conversation, both the woman and one officer, identified as Karthik, recorded the interaction.
In the footage, Karthik can be heard suggesting she stop feeding the animals so that they would “stop coming automatically.” When the woman questioned his conduct, the officer responded with the controversial remark about late-night harassment, which many social media users condemned as “sexist” and “victim-blaming.”
Facing backlash, the officer later claimed he had said “arrest” and not “harassment,” arguing that his warning was about possible legal issues linked to being outdoors after midnight.
Despite the outrage, authorities confirmed that no disciplinary action would be taken. The Thiruvanmiyur police stated that the case had been closed, with no departmental inquiry initiated. The woman has not filed a formal complaint, and no official clarification has been issued regarding the officer’s comments.
Chennai cop to woman: “The reason harassment happens is because you roam around like this after 12 am.”
