Bengaluru: Kolkata Police have arrested Chirag Kapoor, a key figure behind a nationwide digital arrest scam, from Bengaluru. Kapoor is linked to 930 cases of digital fraud, where perpetrators impersonate law enforcement officials via video calls, threatening victims with arrest on false charges and extorting money.

The investigation followed a lead from a ₹7.4 lakh deposit made by a victim, Debashree Dutta, who was coerced into paying the sum after being falsely implicated in a drug-related crime. Subsequent raids uncovered a fake accounts operation, leading to several arrests and the seizure of a variety of fraudulent materials.

Kapoor, who ran the racket remotely, was arrested on January 9, 2025, and is now in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
