Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) head Jagan Mohan Reddy have extended support to Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the controversy regarding his statement in reference to Dr. BR Ambedkar, with Naidu stating that the Opposition will try to make a mountain of a molehill to cause problems for the ruling party.

Naidu, who is also the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo, said during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday that some people preferred controversies over good intentions and therefore wantonly create ruckus regarding hollow issues. The Opposition, which has similar intention, was merely blowing the Home Minister’s words out of proportion, he added, opining that the Congress had never given due respect to Dr. Ambedkar, who is the Father of the Indian Constitution, as per a report in the Times of India.

Naidu also pointed out that the Congress defeated Dr. Ambedkar twice in elections and that a statue of the Dalit icon was installed during VP Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister and not during the rule of the Congress.

Reddy, although not a partner of the NDA, has given indirect support to the Home Minister in a post in the ‘X’ account of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Thursday night, stating, “They say Ambedkar’s name a hundred times... If you say God’s name every time, you will get merit,” Amit Shah’s words led to misconceptions. But, if you observe his words about Ambedkar, the words spoken by BJP members, the words spoken by Prime Minister Modi, it is a good development that everyone respects and praises Ambedkar… Even if someone deliberately insults Ambedkar, it is wrong to say a single word. (sic)”

He added, “Ambedkar’s ideology of equal rights and respect for the poor will always inspire us. To reinforce that inspiration, the YSRCP government erected the world’s largest Ambedkar statue in the heart of Vijayawada city and built a magnificent memorial. Ambedkar will forever be an example not only for us, but for the entire country of India… Jai Bhim (sic)”
