Congress' economic model brought Karnataka to brink of bankruptcy: Tejasvi Surya
Mumbai (PTI): The economic policies of the Congress government have pushed Karnataka to the brink of bankruptcy, BJYM leader Tejasvi Surya alleged on Wednesday while campaigning for the Maharashtra assembly elections.
The BJP MP claimed the southern state is facing severe financial instability.
"It is an irresponsible economic model designed by the Congress in Karnataka. The state is now standing on the brink of bankruptcy and economic chaos. The government's handling of public funds is creating an economic crisis," Surya told reporters in Mumbai.
He claimed the previous BJP government had presented a Rs 20,000 crore revenue surplus budget in Karnataka. However, the "fiscal indiscipline and misgovernance" by Congress caused a revenue deficit of Rs 12,000 crore over the last two years.
He cautioned the "people of Maharashtra" about the potential risk if Congress is elected to power.
Surya claimed the Karnataka government's promise to provide a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 to women remains unfulfilled, forcing the intended beneficiaries to observe indefinite strikes.
"The state government is left with no funds for development," he said, alluding to budgetary constraints caused by pre-poll promises.
Surya claimed even Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D K Shivakumar, recently admitted the paucity of funds for basic infrastructure maintenance.
"Deputy Chief Minister D Shivakumar publicly admitted twice that the state has no money to repair potholes in Bengaluru. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sitting beside Shivakumar also acknowledged this concern," said Surya.

We received request; will decide soon whether to support TVK: Thirumavalavan
Chennai (PTI): VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Thursday said that his party received a request from TVK for support and the high-level committee of his party will decide whether to support the Vijay-led party to form the government.
The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and emerged as the single largest party. Vijay will have to resign from one of the two constituencies he has won.
Though the Congress party, which has five MLAs, has extended support to TVK, the actor-politician-led party was still short of as many seats to touch the magic number of 118, the majority mark in the 234-member House.
"We received the request letter from TVK. We are thankful for that. We have not ignored his (Vijay's) request. We have a procedure. Therefore, our party's high-level committee will decide soon. We are going to discuss the merits and demerits of our position," the VCK leader told reporters here.
With regard to the delay in the governor's call to the TVK, which is the single largest party, to form the government, Thirumavalavan requested the governor to invite Vijay to form the government. "It is a constitutional right and people's verdict," he added.
Asserting that the governor cannot say that Vijay should hold 118 MLAs' support now itself to form the government, he said that after taking over power, Vijay has to prove an absolute majority only on the floor of the Assembly.
