Raigarh: A Dalit man, Panchram Sarthi, was beaten to death by three individuals in Raigarh district on December 24, 2024, under suspicion of attempting to steal rice. The accused, Virendra Sidar, along with his neighbours Ajay and Ashok Pradhan, allegedly tied Sarthi to a tree and assaulted him with bamboo sticks, kicking and punching him. The incident occurred at around 2 a.m., and the police were informed by the village sarpanch at 6 a.m.
The police have arrested the three suspects and charged them with murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, activists are calling for mob lynching charges to be added, as they argue the crime meets the criteria outlined in Section 103(2) of the BNS, which defines mob lynching as murder committed by a group of five or more individuals on grounds such as caste, race, or community.
Degree Prasad Chouhan, a lawyer and activist, stated, “It does not matter what was the reason behind attacking him. Can they take law into their hands? It’s a case of mob lynching.”
