Kolkata, June 19: A solo exhibition of works of celebrated Indian artist Dashrath Patel, tracing his artistic journey across mediums and types over his long lifetime, will open here on September 13, a statement said.

Never restricting himself to a particular style, Patel (1927-2010) is considered a visionary in the field of design, and is often referred to as 'India's Renaissance Man'.

A whole body of his work -- line drawings, ceramics, photographs and collages -- will be on display in the exhibition titled "School".

Curated by design expert Pinakin Patel, the exhibition comes from Emami Art, part of the Emami Group of companies.

"Even though each medium and its imagery were perfectly evolved, he resisted the need to formalise that particular body of work as 'his style', and risk being typecast or iconified. His work was his 'search' and he actively followed that ideology," the organisers said in a statement.

A contemporary of modern masters Tyeb Mehta, M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza and V.S. Gaitonde, Patel practiced in diverse art fields as a painter, ceramist, a graphic designer, industrial design and exhibition design.

"School" particularly explores Patel's photography, a medium for which is he not well known.

The exhibition features key works from the Dashrath Patel Museum, Alibag.

Patel was awarded Padma Shri in 1981, and Padma Bhushan posthumously in 2011.
