Delhi govt likely to conduct trail for artificial rain in May to combat pollution: Minister Sirsa
New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI): The Delhi government is likely to conduct a trial for artificial rain in May as part of its efforts to tackle air pollution, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Thursday.
The trial will be carried out in an area in outer Delhi, with the final site selection to be made by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and IIT Kanpur, he said.
Sirsa said the plan is part of a broader strategy to tackle pollution using multiple methods.
“This is a war against pollution and we are working on various measures, with artificial rain being one of them. Before implementing it on a large scale, we will try to conduct a trial in May when summer is at its peak,” he added.
He further said, “We have asked for detailed reports to determine whether the chemicals used in cloud seeding could have any harmful effects on human health or the environment."
Based on the findings, we will conduct a small-scale test and analyze water samples. If the trial is successful, we will expand the project across Delhi during periods of severe pollution, the environment minister said.

J&K police detains journalist for spreading ‘anti-national content’
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police detained a journalist, Hilal Mir, for allegedly spreading “anti-national content”.
Mir was detained by the police’s counter-intelligence unit and his digital devices, including a mobile phone and laptop, were seized, as reported by The Indian Express.
The police called Mir a “radical social media user” and said that he “used to disseminate extremist/distorted content with an intention to disturb peace and promote disaffection and secessionist ideology and present India in a bad shape”.
A journalist for over two decades, Mir has worked with several local and national news publications. Police accused Mir of being “actively engaged in posting and sharing content aimed at inciting sentiments among young minds and instigating secessionist sentiment by portraying Kashmiris as victims of systemic extermination.”
Police further alleged he “was found in touch with some suspected foreign-based cell numbers involved in suspicious activities, presumably taking dictation from the adversary for disturbing the peace and tranquillity in the Valley, which is a matter of investigation,” added the report.
They said his posts reflect a “veiled attempt to cultivate public resentment, which is a threat to security/sovereignty.”
As per reports, he has been sent to preventive detention till May 13 and has been lodged in Srinagar’s Central Jail.
