New Delhi: In a tragic late-night incident, a speeding white Audi driven by an intoxicated man ran over five people sleeping on a footpath near Shiva Camp in Vasant Vihar, southwest Delhi. The accident, which occurred around 1:45 am on July 9, left two couples and an eight-year-old girl injured.

The accused, 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar, a resident of Dwarka, was arrested on the spot by police personnel. Medical tests confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

According to the police, the victims, Ladhi (40), her husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), their daughter Bimla (8), and another couple, Ram Chander (45) and Narayani (35), are all residents of Rajasthan. They had been sleeping on the pavement when the car ran over them, leaving a scene of devastation with torn blankets, scattered footwear, and broken belongings.

Eyewitnesses and preliminary investigations indicate that Shekhar lost control of the vehicle and drove straight over the sleeping families. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant sections, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
